It got its name due to the fact that it is a midway point bewteen Fort Worth and El Paso on the Texas and Pacific Railroad. As the center for the WEst Texas oil fields, Midland transformed significantly around 1923 with the discovery of oil in the Permian Basin. The Permian Basin produces one fifth of the nations total poetroleum and natural gas.
