Monahans, TX

Community Information

Monahans, TX is known as “The Center of the Permian Basin.” Exploration of this area can be traced back to 1583 when a Spanish explorer named Antonio de Espejo named the Native Americans found in this area, “Vaqueros” because they hunted the “hump-backed cow” or known to us as the bison.

The history of the community of Monahans began in the late 1880s when the transcontinental railroad was being built but came to a halt because of the lack of water for the workers and animals. Although, a surveyor named John Thomas Monahan discovered an abundance of good water by digging a well which was a huge part in the success of this city.

Oil was then discovered in the area in 1926 which switched the local economy from being agricultural to industrial. Now today, Mohandas, TX is a beautiful place that attracts thousands of tourists each year and is home to about 7,356 people (2013). Tourists and locals alike enjoy time spent in Monahans Sandhills State Park along with the many local businesses and restaurants found throughout the town.
