The Odessa Community
Odessa is the county seat of Ector County, however a small portion of the city extends into Midland County. Located along the southwestern edge of the Llano Estacado, also known as the Staked Plain, Odessa is rich with oil and natural gas reserves. In the 1930’s oil became a major attraction for new residents. With a population of over 118,000, Odessa is the 29th most populated city in Texas. Founded in 1881, Odessa was a stopping point for cattle drivers as well as a cattle shipping point for the Texas and Pacific Railway.
With a semiarid climate, typical of west Texas, summers are hot and sunny and winters are mild and dry. The area is subject to a combination of high temperatures and frequent high winds. That’s a dangerous mixture, especially in the oil fields.
